What is Import Export Code (IEC) ?. Importance of IEC.
Importer Exporter Code is an identity number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for the purpose of doing Importing and Exporting business in India. This identity number is shortly known as IEC or IE Code. Filing application for IEC online registration is the first step for every entrepreneur who wish to do EXIM business in India. In today’s economy, Export Import business have wide scope and profit making opportunity in India. IEC code is mandatory for transacting goods and services between the foreign countries within India.
Import Export Code act as a tracking code of every activities or process of a export / import transaction. So, we mandatory quote IEC at various process of Import Export procedures in India. The DGFT uses this IEC to track the Export process and determines the export incentives to the entrepreneur. Some government statutory bodies have exemptions to apply for Import Export Code in India. Like other statutory registrations, IEC Registration have no need to file monthly return or annual return. Now, IE Code once allotted have life time validity and no need to renew by pay any fees at frequent interval. The IEC once allotted against one pan is not transferable to other person, but he can cancel it by file an application at DGFT.

ICEGATE stands for the Indian Customs Electronic Commerce/Electronic Data interchange (EC/EDI) Gateway. ICEGATE is a portal that provides e-filing services to the trade and cargo carriers and other clients of Customs Department (collectively called Trading Partner).
The Indian Customs EDI System (ICES) is now operational at 134 major customs locations handling nearly 98% of India’s International trade in terms of import and export consignments.
ICES has two aspects:
- Internal Automation of the Custom House for a comprehensive, paperless, fully automated customs clearance system that makes the functioning of Customs clearance transparent and efficient.
- Online, real-time electronic interface with the trade, transport,Banks and regulatory agencies concerned with customs clearance of import and export cargo through ICEGATE.
- ICES is designed to exchange/transact customs clearance related information electronically using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). A large number of documents that trade, transport and regulatory agencies (collectively called Trading Partners) are required to submit/ receive in the process of live customs clearance are now being processed online.
At present, about 24000 users are registered with ICEGATE who are serving about 6.72 lacs importer/exporter. ICEGATE links about 15 broad types partners with Customs EDI through message exchanges enabling faster Customs clearance and in turn facilitating EXIM Trade.
ICEGATE is an infrastructure project that fulfills the department’s EC/EDI and data communication requirements. Through this facility the department offers a host of services, including electronic filing of the Bill of Entry( import goods declaration), Shipping Bills (export goods declaration) and related electronic messages between Customs and the Trading Partners using communication facilities (E-mail, Web-upload & FTP) using the communication protocols commonly used on the internet. The airlines and shipping agents can file manifests through the internet using this facility,while the custodians and cargo logistics operators interact with Customs EDI through ICEGATE for cargo and logistics and related information. Besides, data is also exchanged between Customs and the various regulatory and licensing agencies such as DGFT, RBI, Ministry of Steel and DGCIS through ICEGATE. The National Import Database (NIDB) and Export Commodity Database (ECDB) for Directorate of valuation are also being serviced through ICEGATE. All electronic documents/ messages being handled by the ICEGATE are processed at the Customs’ end by the Indian Customs EDI System (ICES), which is running at 134 customs locations. Department has embarked upon Centralization of its infrastructure and all customs locations have been shifted to centralized infrastructure hosted at Data Centre by linking them through MPLS based WAN.
In addition to e-filing, ICEGATE also provides host of other services like e-payment, on-line registration for IPR, Document Tracking status at Customs EDI, online verification of DEPB/DES/EPCG licences, IE code status, PAN based CHA data and links to various other important websites/information pertaining to the Customs business.
The ICEGATE also provides 24X7 helpdesk facility for its trading partners. To ensure secure filing returns, it is proposed to use digital signatures on the Bill of Entry and other documents/ messages to be handled on the gateway.

What is the procedure to know drawback status against my IEC?
- Navigate to ‘Services’ tab and select your user type
- Select Drawback Enquiry from the left menu of available services
- Enter IEC code, PAN Number, Location and required date range in the form displayed
- Submit the details to view your drawback status by selecting the appropriate button – ‘Drawback Pending Status’ or ‘Drawback Sanctioned Status’
- If your drawback details are not available on ‘Drawback Pending Status’, then your drawback amount has been sanctioned by the bank and you can view the status by clicking on ‘Drawback Sanctioned Status’ button
- In case your drawback against a Shipping Bill is pending, ‘Drawback Pending Status’ will view the current queue of the Shipping Bill and help understand the current status
- In case your drawback against a Shipping Bill is sanctioned, ‘Drawback Sanctioned Status’ will view details including Scroll number, date and the amount of drawback sanctioned

What is the procedure to know status of ROSL against a particular IEC no.?
- Navigate to ‘Services’ tab and select your user type
- Select ‘ROSL Sanctioned Status’ from the left menu of available services
- Enter IEC Code, PAN Number, Location Name and select appropriate date range, in the form displayed
- Click on ‘ROSL Sanctioned Status’
- A list of Shipping Bills will be displayed along with the corresponding ROSL scroll details and amounts
- This report can be printed and even be downloaded in Excel format

What is the procedure to track the status of IE Code registration at DGFT’send?
- Please visit DGFT’s website to confirm the status of your IE Code registration.
- To check the same via ICEGATE portal, navigate to ‘Services’ tab and select your user type.
- Select ‘Check IE Code/BIN Status’service from the left menu of available services.
- Click on ‘IE Code@DGFT’ button in section 1 of the form to check whether your IE code has reached DGFT headquarters and the correctness of your IE code details.
- By clicking on this, you will be redirected to DGFT’swebsite.
- In Case your IE code with correct details is not available, kindly contact ICEGATE Helpdesk Team on Toll Free No. 1800-3010-1000 or send an Email to icegatehelpdesk@icegate.gov.in witha copy of your IEC.
What is the procedure to check status and correctness of your IEC Code at Customs?
- Navigate to ‘Services’ tab on ICEGATE portal and select your user type.
- Select ‘Check IE Code/BIN Status’service from the left menu of available services.
- In section 2 of the form, enter the IE code and click on ‘IE Code@ICEGATE’ button.
- An IEC Code online Enquiry Form will be presented displaying details of the IEC along with details of its branches.
- The table containing IEC details would also contain the current status of the IEC Code Registration . The current status can be any one of the following. Significance of each of them is described alongside:
0 – Normal Import Export Code1 – IEC Blacklisted 2 – IEC Suspended 3 – IEC Cancelled 4 – IEC Cleared from Blacklist 7 – Revoke Suspension of IEC Code8 – Revoke Cancellation of IEC 9 – Amended IEC Code

- Enter IEC No., PAN No. and select appropriate date range, in the form displayed
- Enter valid date range. Date range of more than one month will not be permitted
- In order to view the summary of Shipping Bills, Click on ‘Shipping Bill Summary’ button
- The report displayed contains details all SBs, their details and Current Status
- This report can be printed and is also downloadable in Excel format

What is the procedure to check the summary of Bill of Entry (BE) for a particular IEC Code on ICEGATE?

What is the procedure to check list of challans against my Import Export Code?
- On the ICEGATE portal, click on E-Payment link on homepage.
- Enter your details: Document type, Location and IEC Number.
- ICEGATE Custom E-Payment Gateway page will be displayed.
- Here you can view list of unpaid challans for your IEC number and corresponding Location entered.
- You can also view pending transactions by clicking on ‘Incomplete Transactions’ link available in the left menu.
- To view your current transactions, click on ‘Transaction Summary’ link available in the left menu. To view your transactions date and location wise, click on ‘Transaction Report’ link available in the left menu
How can I check if a license has been received from DGFT at Customs?
- Navigate to ‘Services’ tab and select your user type.
- Select ‘License received from DGFT’service from the left menu of available services.
- Click on ‘IEC Based’ in the left menu if you wish to check the status against a particular IEC Code No.
- Select Location from the drop down and enter the IEC Code No.
- Enter valid date range. Date range of more than one year will not be permitted
- Click on Search button to view the status of your License.
- It will display the License Number, its corresponding Scheme Code, License Date and Status (fresh or amended license) along with Date of Integration at ICEGATE and Error Code
- To understand the significance of the displayed Error Code on the enquiry, click on ‘Click Here to view error code list’ link.
- Click on ‘License Based’ in the left menu if you wish to check the status against a particular License No.
- Enter the Licence No. and valid date range. Date range of more than one year will not be permitted
- Click on Search button to view the status of your License
- It will display the License Number, its corresponding Scheme Code, License Date and Status (fresh or amended license) along with Date of Integration at ICEGATE and Error Code
